NFSS Begins Zonal Training in Gwagwalada to Bolster Forest Security Across North-Central Nigeria

Gwagwalada , FCT – August 02, 2025 The Nigerian Forest Security Service ( NFSS ) has officially commenced a comprehensive zonal training program for its North-Central regional commands at the Government Secondary School (GSS), Gwagwalada, with over 10,000 foresters from across the region in attendance. The four-day training, holding from July 31st to August 3rd, is themed: > " Strengthening Forest Security Through Inter-Agency Collaboration and Intelligence Sharing." The event is hosted by the FCT Command, bringing together NFSS operatives from Kwara , Kogi, Nassarawa and Niger States, in a strategic move to reinforce synergy in intelligence gathering and joint forest operations. The Nigerian Forest Security Service (NFSS) is not a constitutionally recognized paramilitary organization like the Nigerian Police Force or Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps . However, there have been efforts, both by state governments and non-federal actors, to establish forest guards or rangers to combat banditry , illegal logging , and environmental degradation , especially in northern and middle-belt regions . The NFSS was initially formed in 2021 as the Nigerian Hunters & Forest Security Service and was renamed to NFSS in late 2024, as announced by its Commander General, Dr. Wole Joshua Osatimehin .
